Fr. James Manley was born in 1886 in West Virginia, and was ordained at Belmont Abbey in 1916.
He died in Walter Reed Hospital in Washington on April 20, 1940. Fr. Manley volunteered his services as a chaplain
during the First World War with the permission of Bishop Leo Haid, and saw service at the front in
France where he participated in several major engagements, receiving injuries which resulted in
his discharge. He was one of the few priests in the country at the time to be elected commander of an
American Legion Post and delegate to a national convention. He was a leading factor in the
organization of the Golden Gloves tournament for young boys.
Bishop Thomas C. Darst, East Carolina Episcopalian Diocese said “Father Manley died for a cause,
not communism or nazism or any of the other miserableisms of the world today, but he died for
the cause of the Kingdom of God.”

Father Gallagher was born in Wilmington, Delaware, May 1, 1874. He attended St. Paulʼs parochial
school in Wilmington; Roanoke High School Roanoke, Va; Epiphany College, Baltimore, Md; St.
Josephʼs Seminary, Baltimore, Md., and Belmont Abbey Seminary, Belmont, N.C. He was
ordained on June 09, 1907, at the Abbey Cathedral by the late Bishop Leo Haid, O.S.B. As a priest
of the Vicariate-Apostolic of North Carolina, and later of the diocese of Raleigh, Father Gallagher
served as assistant pastor at Holy Redeemer Church, Newton Grove; at St. Maryʼs Church,
Wilmington; as pastor, at St. Paulʼs Church, New Bern, for twelve years: as pastor of Our Lady of
Perpetual Help Church, Rocky Mount, for about five years; as pastor of St. Elizabethʼs Church,
Elizabeth City, and from 1931 to April 1944, as chaplain of St. Josephʼs Hospital in Asheville.
In April 1944, Father Gallagher was named chaplain at St. Genevieve-of-the Pines in Asheville.
Father Gallagher remained at St. Genevieveʼs for about a year, returning to St. Josephʼs Hospital as
chaplain last summer.

Obituary: The Rev. Joseph P. Cronin, pastor of St. Clementʼs Catholic Church in Wilton Manors for
nine years, died April 11, 1986 in Plantation. He was 75. Rev. Cronin, born in Waterbury, Conn.,
was ordained at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., on June 10, 1940. His first
assignment was as pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church in Lumberton, N.C., in 1941. He moved
to Florida in 1944 to become assistant pastor of St. Maryʼs Cathedral in Miami, where he stayed
until 1952. In 1952-53, Rev. Cronin was pastor of Blessed Trinity Church in Ocala. Then he
served as pastor of St. Patrickʼs Church in Gainesville from 1953 to 1956. Rev. Cronin also served
at churches in Palatka, Riviera Beach, and Coral Gables. In 1959, Rev. Cronin became the first
pastor of St. Pius X Church in Fort Lauderdale, but left to become pastor of St. Clementʼs Church
in 1963. He became pastor of St. Patrickʼs Church in Miami Beach in 1972. He stayed at St.
Patrick`s until his retirement in 1981.
